Do Mileage Tracking Apps Drain Your Battery?
A well-built mileage tracker costs a few percent of battery a day, because it stays asleep until the phone's motion sensors say you are driving and only then turns on GPS. Trackers that drain a phone are the ones polling location continuously whether you are moving or not.
"It will kill my battery" is the most common reason people leave automatic tracking switched off — and then reconstruct a year of driving from memory. The concern was reasonable a decade ago. It is mostly obsolete now, and the reason is worth understanding, because it also tells you which apps to avoid.
What actually drains the battery
GPS itself is not especially cheap, but it is also not what ruins a phone. The expensive pattern is continuous high-accuracy location polling: an app that asks for a precise fix every second, all day, whether the phone is in a car or on a nightstand. That keeps the GPS chip and the app's process awake around the clock and can cost 20–30% of a battery a day.
Modern trackers do not work that way. Both iOS and Android expose a low-power motion classifier — a dedicated coprocessor that already knows, at almost no energy cost, whether you are still, walking or in a vehicle. A good tracker subscribes to that signal and sleeps. When the phone says "automotive", the app wakes, starts sampling location, and records the drive. When the phone has been stationary for a few minutes, it stops the drive and goes back to sleep.
So the real cost is not "GPS all day". It is "GPS while you drive" — and if you drive an hour a day, that is an hour of location sampling, not twenty-four. In practice that lands in the low single-digit percent of daily battery for most people, comparable to a music app or a podcast.
Why it may still look worse than it is
iOS and Android battery screens attribute location work to the app that requested it, which makes a tracker's line look prominent even when the absolute number is small. And an app that reports "background activity" is not necessarily burning power — waiting on a motion event costs essentially nothing. Compare percentages, not the ranking.
Two genuine costs do exist. Recording a long drive with the screen on and a live map is heavier than recording with the phone in your pocket — the display is usually the biggest consumer in any phone. And in a dead-signal area, the phone will hunt for cell towers, which is expensive and has nothing to do with the tracker.
The settings that matter
- Location: Always. Counter-intuitively, "While Using" is worse for battery and worse for your log: the app cannot sleep-and-wake properly, so it either misses drives or has to work harder to catch them.
- Leave battery optimization on for the app on Android only if the app documents that it handles it — motion-triggered trackers generally ask for an exemption precisely so they can stay asleep and still be woken by the system.
- Do not force-quit the app. Swiping it away does not save power; it stops the drive from being recorded and, on iOS, delays the system waking it again.
- Keep the screen off while driving. You do not need to watch the map to get the log.
What to look for in a tracker
- Motion-activated, not always-on. If the marketing says it tracks continuously, believe it.
- Drives survive a force-quit or a restart. A tracker that loses the trip when the OS reclaims it will either miss drives or compensate by staying awake.
- Adaptive sampling. Sampling should thin out on a steady highway stretch and tighten in stop-and-go traffic, rather than running at maximum everywhere.
- No ads and no third-party trackers. Ad SDKs wake the app and use the network on their own schedule; that is real battery spent on something that is not your mileage log.
The trade you are actually making
A few percent of battery a day against a complete, dated log worth thousands of dollars in deductions is not a close call. Mile is built on the motion-first pattern described above — it sleeps until the phone reports driving, recovers drives after a force-quit, and carries no ad SDKs at all. The battery question is fair to ask; the answer just is not the one it used to be.
